Praise for Marlborough’s expanded Mobility Store came from health campaigner Val Compton when she cut the tape to declare it open alongside disabled Town Crier Alf Johnson yesterday (Tuesday).
With 82-year-old Alf on his mobility scooter, the duo made the appropriate pair to carry out the official launch ceremony of the store before an audience of invited guests including Marlborough town councillors.
The impressive store stands opposite the small original one opened last September adjoining the Kennet Pharmacy in Figgins Lane – and within yards too of Marlborough’s Medical Practice.
“I was delighted when the little Mobility Store arrived over the road from here – in very small premises,” Mrs Compton, who led the long campaign to save Savernake Hospital’s minor injuries unit, told them.
“Supporting people with gadgets, gizmos and mobility aids or scooters all enable them to maintain independence for longer. This is really important for quality of life.”
“I love to see everyone out on their scooters, in the shops and round the open spaces in town, even walking their dogs whilst on a scooter.”
“The Town Crier and I did a test run of the new boardwalk in Stonebridge Meadow – out in the middle of nowhere by the river it was wonderful.”
“It’s a place previously completely inaccessible until recent times – and all new projects must bear this sort of accessibility in mind.”
And then she added: “Now I’m thrilled to bits that this huge new Mobility Store has opened. Whatever your problem, permanent or temporary, you can come here, get ideas and advice try out equipment, see what suits and maintain your independence.”
“We have a mobility store with exciting plans and ideas of their own. This will be a centre of excellence for all those with mobility problems… and much, much more.
“As an ordinary citizen of Marlborough and a friend and supporter of the Mobility Store, it is my great pleasure to declare it open.”
