St John's stages sell-out production of 'Annie'

Year 7 student, Beth, in the lead role as AnnieYear 7 student, Beth, in the lead role as AnnieTickets for ‘Annie’ at St. John’s Theatre on the Hill on Feb 7,8 and 9 have been sold out for over a week.  Produced by Head of Drama, Miss Matyla, the cast of over a hundred students from Years 7 to 12 and a dog are getting ready to entertain their audiences.

Students have been busy rehearsing for nearly five months, since last September and Miss Matyla has been impressed with their dedication and enthusiasm.  The cast has also visited the West End production of ‘Annie’ which stars Craig Revel Horwood from ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ for further inspiration..

The St. John’s production features a live band of student and teacher musicians conducted by Head of Music, Miss Kenvin.  All the backstage production crew are students which gives them valuable technical, sound and lighting experience.  Students have also assisted with painting the set and with props.

The play offers a range of parts for all ages of students. “It has been great for the younger students to be able to work with older students and have mentors,” says Miss Matyla.

Year 7 student, Beth will play Annie but the other star of the show is Beano, the Jack Russell dog, who has been working hard at his role of Sandy!

Beano’s owner, Year 7 student Nancy, has been busy training her dog. “In the play she has to run onto the stage on her own. We had to practise several nights after school and use a lot of dog treats to get her to do this! Once she ran onto the stage in the wrong place when the chorus was singing. I hope she doesn’t do this in the real performance.”

Miss Matyla told marlborough.news, “Who knows what’s going to happen. It could be funny if the dog goes wrong. It will add to the comedy.”

“The closing number with the entire cast on the stage will wow the audience,” says Miss Matyla. The lucky people who have tickets are in for a treat.
