Autumnal launch for 'The Lucky, Lucky Leaf' at the White Horse BookshopThe Lucky, Lucky Leaf - a new picture book aimed at three to seven year olds - was launched at the White Horse Bookshop at the weekend (October 20).
It is the work of local illustrator Chantal Bourgonje and her partner, TV script writer David Hoskins. The main characters, Horace and Nim are forest friends who catch falling leaves on a windy day. The book celebrates friendship, joy, and playing outside.
“The book evokes memories of gentler times,” Chantal told marlborough.news. “It’s an ideal book at bedtime book, encouraging family togetherness.”
Horace and Nim, the main characters, started life as cartoons aimed at adults, their gentle humour intended to rekindle childhood memories. Chantal published them on a blog and had a worldwide following.
Next, Redan’s Friends Magazine for Children (circulation 70,00) liked the characters and published some Horace and Nim stories. From this success The Lucky, Lucky Leaf was born. The main idea for the storyline comes from David’s childhood game of catching a falling leaf for luck.
Chantal illustrated the Adventures of Rolo books, written by Debi Evans and The Savernake Big Belly Oak and other stories by Barbara Townsend – both with a local connection.
As a big dog lover, Chantal has also published the Worzel series of books which help young children understand how they should behave around dogs to keep safe. The books offer parental advice and are written from the dog’s point of view.
The Lucky, Lucky Leaf is being published in Canada, Australia , New Zealand as well as the UK. It is on sale in The White Horse Bookshop - just in time for Christmas stocking shopping.
