"The Storm": James Wilton's energetic dance company investigates mental health issues

Photos by Steve TannerPhotos by Steve TannerJames Wilton Dance’s The Storm is an entertaining, energetic and thought-provoking production on the topic of mental health and has already received glowing reviews.

A performance of The Storm is being brought by the Wiltshire charity Operaluna to Dauntsey's School Memorial Hall on 24 April 2019 at 7pm. Operaluna is a Wiltshire charity that supports and promotes the arts to local young people and is pleased to bring one of the UK’s leading choreographers in contemporary dance to a Wiltshire audience.

The Storm features seven dancers, has a specially composed score by Amarok/Michal Wojtas and was conceived with scientific input from Dr David Belin, lecturer in behavioural neuroscience at Cambridge University.

James Wilton is a renowned choreographer in the UK, recognised for blending physical choreography with contemporary dance.  In 2013 he choreographed the opening and closing ceremonies for the Rugby League World Cup.   Since forming his company, James Wilton Dance has toured extensively both in the UK and internationally to critical acclaim, as well as winning numerous awards

The evening will begin with a short curtain raiser by young students from Marlborough Academy of Dance and Drama and Dauntsey's School dance department.   James Wilton will be holding dance workshops before the performance with students of 14 years and upwards from Dauntsey’s and the Marlborough Academy.

Cheryl Heuston is the Principal of Marlborough Academy of Dance and Drama: “This is an amazing opportunity for our dance group, who will perform a seven minute dance routine at Dauntsey’s Memorial Hall that has been choreographed by James Wilton Dance and practised over the holidays."

"The curtain raiser gives young people the opportunity to perform in front of a new audience, helping to develop self- confidence and team building skills.”

The performance will run for one hour and twenty minutes with a short interval.  It is being sponsored by Wansbroughs Solicitors who have offices in Devizes and Melksham.  The performance is open to the public and tickets are available from Swindon Dance Tel: 01793 601700, www.swindondance.org.uk : £10 adults & £8 students.

Operaluna was established in 1995 to promote young singers, dancers and musicians in Wiltshire, as well as bringing high quality opera and dance to new audiences in the county - at low ticket prices. The charity supports various local artistic endeavours, including the Devizes Eisteddfod, the Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford-upon-Avon and Swindon Dance.

It has an education arm which runs opera and drama workshops in local schools and in recent years has held workshops at Southbroom Infants School, Devizes, Pewsey Vale School, Lark Hill Primary and Easton Royal Primary School. www.operaluna.com

Dauntsey’s School Memorial Hall is at Dauntsey’s School, West Lavington, Devizes, Wiltshire SN10 4HE www.dauntseys.org
