A moment for Marlborough history as the Mayor walks down the aisle to wed

Marlborough’s mayor and mayoress walked into the history books when they were married in the parish church of St Mary’s yesterday (Saturday).

By marrying his mayoress, Fiona Lawson, Mayor Guy Loosmore is believed to be the first standing mayor in 703 years to be wed whilst in office since the town was granted borough status – and a charter for a mayor – by King John.

The ceremony was conducted by the Revd Bob Toogood before a congregation of family, friends and fellow councillors as Marlborough’s rarely seen town flag fluttered above the nearby town hall.

The sun shone and the rain held off as the wedding party assembled for photographs in the churchyard of St Mary's, followed by the reception at the town hall.

The mayor has a great sense of local history, as he revealed when he donned the red mayor robes and chain of office in May.  He told the town council:

“Let us celebrate what we have and build on it in a positive and harmonious way.  Thank you to those who have helped so far and to those who will in the future, making special mention to Fiona, my Mayoress for all her patience so far and for her support in the forthcoming year.

“We are both very much looking forward to meeting more people in our community.  Oh yes, fitting a few more things in, we are also getting married in my mayoral year.  A first, from my understanding for a mayor in office.”

The couple will be taking their honeymoon in France before returning to resume their mayoral duties across the town.

The Mayor was greeted with a celebratory round of applause when he took the chair last night (Monday) at the full Marlborough town council meeting.

He thanked councillors and invited them – and any members of the public present – to a glass of wine with himself and the Mayoress at the close of the meeting.
