SILVER IN ENGLAND - A FRESH LOOK

a talk by

MARTIN ELLIS

At the next meeting of the

THE ARTS SOCIETY KENNET AND SWINDON (TASKS) Society

promptly at 11.00 on Monday 17 June 2019

at the Ellendune Centre, Wroughton. Coffee will be served from 10.00.

The lecture:  Silver in England: A Fresh Look: There are few more beautiful materials than silver.

Silver is malleable, strong, antibacterial. You can cast it, cut it, hammer it, score

and engrave it, turn it on a lathe, polish it and even stain it.

This wonderful metal however is also one of the most recyclable,

but it is also subject to the vagaries of taste.

You can, after all, melt it down, turn it into coin, re-fashion it.

This lecture  take a fresh look at the story of this most sumptuous of materials,

exploring the histories of its use, its making, its social value and its design.

We celebrate its place in English history and society,

as well as  exploring the brilliant silversmiths whose designs

and techniques made silver metalworking into a great art form.
The lecturer: Martin Ellis:  Martin is an experienced curator, lecturer and broadcaster

who until recently was

Principal Curator and Head of Collections Research &

Development at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery.

He now divides his time between curatorial consultancy, lecturing &

working with his wife Julia in their art & antiques business.

Martin is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts,

& a Freeman of the Goldsmiths’ Company.
