The lecture: William Morris: The Art of Life and the Life of Art:
The polymath William Morris
is rightly celebrated as a designer, craftsman and artist,
who, as a young man
decided to dedicate his artistic life to counter the ugly industrial world
he saw developing around him.
In addition to his art he was a deeply reflective man,
who, through his poetry and his writings, expressed
passionate views on an improved quality of life
which should be available to all.
He was one of the earliest pupils at Marlborough College
– he was there during the school rebellion.
He is rated by many as the most influential man of Victorian England.
The lecturer: Dr Antony Buxton lectures on the history of art,
architecture and design, and material and domestic culture
for the Department for Continuing Education, University of Oxford
and other British and American institutions of higher education.
Prior to academic teaching he was for many years a
furniture designer-maker and period furniture conservator.
