We are deeply honoured to receive the “Swift Sure” steering oar from our friends in Marlborough, New Zealand.
It symbolises the link between us and holds out the hope of forging closer and mutually beneficial ties. Though very different in population and geographical size, we both have a great deal to offer visitors and together we can explore new ways of promoting the attractions awaiting them.
The prime mover in this bequeathing of the oar is my Ceremonial Officer, David Sherratt here today, who put the suggestion to Jeff Sewell, an active participant in the link for many years. Jeff got Ron Perano, the boat builder, Mayor Alistair Sowman and Debbie Pepler, a bridge builder between the two communities, on board, and the rest is nautical history.
Its passage to Marlborough UK has been as tempestuous a voyage as many an early whaler must have had, but here it is, staggering us by its sheer size! I’m sure all the Kiwis present will feel proud to be part of this ceremony: may our links continue to flourish in the years ahead.
