You are the music in me! - a suggestion for the Streets of Marlborough
David Sherratt's interesting letter on what names should be given to the proposed new streets in Marlborough underlined the opportunity such naming presents for the town.
I attended the council meeting when the naming issue arose and was dismayed to hear serious suggestions that the roads be called after distant battles from 200 years ago, rare bats and returning WW1 soldiers.
With the greatest of respect for our forefathers and for the environment of course, the town should nevertheless always be looking ahead. Our new developments should inspire and motivate not only those that live in the new communities, but also the spirit of the town. I'm sure we have a galaxy of notable local scientists or technologists who could be acknowledged, but on a more contemporary theme perhaps we should underline Marlborough's vibrant arts and music scene.
How about a music theme with Jools Holland, Humphrey Lyttleton, Acker Bilk, Rick Wakeman, Toyah Wilcox, Elkie Brooks, Georgie Fame, Claire Teal, Chris Jagger and Julie Felix in our hall of fame and who've all played here. How does that song go: 'You are the music in me!'
This is the Marlborough we want to shout about!
