MP takes porn battle to BT
Pete Davison - 16/05/2011
Claire Perry MP, second from right, takes her anti-porn campaign to BT
Marlborough's MP, Claire Perry, has taken her fight against internet pornography to the gates of communications giant BT.
On Monday (May 16) Ms Perry attended a rally organised by Mediawatch UK and the charity Safermedia calling on BT to make access to internet porn an 'opt-in' option for their web users.
The groups erected a 10 foot high message asking BT to 'Block Porn' and also handed in a letter to chief executive Ian Livingstone asking BT to make access to internet porn an opt-in option.
A 2011 report by the London School of Economics suggests that 11 percent of children in UK have seen sexual content on websites and 24 percent have seen sexual content online or offline.
Meanwhile, a recent YouGov survey found that 93 percent of women and 73 percent of men believe that the easy availability of pornographic content on the internet is damaging to children.
Ms Perry wants ISPs to provide filters that block access to pornographic material, and make the ability to access to adult material a feature to which the user opts in, rather than opts out.
said: "As a mother with three children I know how difficult it is to keep children from seeing inappropriate material on the internet.
"We don't want censorship, but we do want Britain's internet service providers to give their customers a choice and I am supporting this campaign to get BT, the largest ISP in the UK, to make internet porn an opt-in option.”
Earlier this month, the campaign chalked up a victory when internet service provider Talk Talk introduced its new Homesafe service, which offers users control filters that can block inappropriate content from being accessed on their computers.
The MP said: “"When I started campaigning to make access to internet pornography an opt-in, many industry experts said it was technologically impossible to provide a network-level filter.
"TalkTalk have announced a service that does just that. Their HomeSafe service allows users to set controls for all devices connected to a home network that block out inappropriate content.
"This is a very significant step forward in our efforts to make internet access safer and I commend TalkTalk for making the service available, free of charge to all of their customer.
Safermedia, however, was far from satisfied, pointing out that access to adult material was still the default, and users had to opt-out to block it.
