Fallen tree on A4/London Road causes traffic gridlock in Marlborough
On Wednesday afternoon what has been described as 'a massive tree' fell across the A4/London Road on the hill below Savernake Hospital and close to the bridge by the entrance to Chopping Knife Lane.
At the top of the hill a passer-by was re-directing west bound traffic back to the Stitchcombe turning. In town there was what one driver described to Marlborough.News as 'traffic mayhem' with the police closing some roads.
At six o'clock both the High Street and George Lane were repoorted to be at a standstill: "It's total chaos."
At 5.40pm there was a report that Barn Street was solid with traffic backed up to Ogbourne St Andrew.
By 7.15pm the tress had been removed and the last clearing away was nearly finished - soon afterwards the road reopened: about three-and-a-half hours after the tree fell.
