Friends of Savernake Hospital and the Community provide £5,500 grant to Arts Together
At their Annual General Meeting (May 11), the Friends of Savernake Hospital and the Community (the Friends) presented a cheque for £5,500 to the local charity Arts Together.
Arts Together is a pioneering charity working to improve the health, well-being and quality of life of older people by providing a range of participatory arts projects in Marlborough, Pewsey and four other Wiltshire locations. This plays an important role in countering elderly people's loneliness and isolation.
The Marlboorugh group meet at Lawrence Acre on Mondays. Friends’ Chairman, Janet Louth, visited an Arts Together session there last month and was very impressed.
The money will help fund some of the support services offered to members who attend the sessions. Arts Together has learnt from experience about the many obstacles the elderly face in maintaining an active life especially in rural Wiltshire.
Karolyne Fudge, Malik Manager of Arts Together: "We now have the funds to provide transport for those who need it and a hot lunch for everyone at all of our sessions. We’re extremely grateful to Savernake Hospital Friends for recognising the benefits of what we do and how it contributes to the bigger healthcare picture.”
Julia McNeill, who received the cheque from the Friends chair, Janet Louth, volunteers with the Marlborough group: “For some members our sessions provide the only regular opportunity to share a meal and time with others. We have fun, talk, listen and make some really wonderful art work.”
Janet Louth reported to the meeting that everyone was full of praise for the group she visited and said how beneficial it is to them: "They talked about how good it was to meet with others at the art sessions, and to be keeping their minds - and hands - active through the various art projects.”
Both organisations are seeking volunteers to help with their work. The Friends want volunteers for the shop at Savernake Hospital and as trustees. Their website has details or you can contact Janet Louth at 01672 513868.
