Christmas is coming – Town Council applies for road closure

Written by Peter Davison on .

With only 97 sleeps to Christmas, Marlborough Town Council is consulting traders and residents over the potential closure of the town’s High Street for the switching on of the Christmas lights.

The format of the event – which this year will be held on Friday, November 18 – has not yet been announced, but the council wants to close High Street to traffic from 3pm until 9pm for the safety of the anticipated crowds.

The Christmas-lights switch-on traditionally attracts thousands of people to High Street, with children keen to see Santa on his sleigh, and count down to the illumination of the town centre.

Last year there was an extra special treat for revellers: a surprise appearance by the band Scouting for Girls, who filmed their performance for a video to accompany their single Christmas in the Air (Tonight) – their bid for Christmas Number 1.

Anyone who wishes to comment on the application should contact the Traffic Orders Team, Sustainable Transport Group, Wiltshire Council, Bythesea Road, Trowbridge BA14 BJN before Friday, September 30.

◙ Remember: Marlborough High Street will be closed from from midday on Friday, October 7 until 8am on Sunday, October 9 for the Little Mop, which takes place on Saturday, October 8 from noon, and from midday on Friday, October 14 until 8am on Sunday, October 16 for the Big Mop, which takes place on Saturday, October 15 from noon.
