Marlborough remembers Passchendaele

Whilst the commemorations were taking place at Ypres, in Belgium to remember the those who fell at the terrible and intense Great War battle of Passchendaele, Alec Light (left), Chairman of Marlborough British Legion and Wiltshire Councillor Stewart Dobson (right) added Marlborough’s note of remembrance to the centenary by laying a wreath at the War Memorial by the Wye House roundabout.

“It must have been something that none of us today could have ever imagined, even in our worst nightmare” said Alec.  “So many who died, the scars of the experience amongst those who survived, it is way beyond anything that we could ever comprehend...... thankfully”  he added.

"Both Alec as Chairman and myself as a committee member of the Legion felt that it was important that both the town and the local Branch of the Royal British Legion were seen to commemorate the centenary of this terrible battle."  added Councillor Dobson.

In the approximately one hundred days of the offensive the number of allied troops that were listed as either dead, missing or wounded totalled nearly one quarter of a million, with a further two hundred thousand German troops who fell.
