The Town Council are still busy raising funds to complete the work and equipping of the new Marlborough Community and Youth Centre – in the former Youth Centre building that was closed by Wiltshire Council.
It was announced at the Full Council meeting on Monday (November 6) that McCarthy and Stone, the company building the retirement homes at the foot of Granham Hill, are interested in giving some form of funding for the Centre.
Apart from asking people to vote for them in the Aviva Community Fund competition, they are asking people to make good use of their tokens when they shop at Tesco – dropping them into the right box to win money from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.
Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores – awarded to local community projects.
Voting with the tokens given out at check-outs is now open in Marlborough’s Tesco store – and remains open throughout November and December.
Tesco’s Bags of Help project [see below] has already delivered over £36 million to nearly 8,000 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop.
There will be a Christmas themed event to launch the refurbished centre on Friday, December 15.
In the meantime some extra work is being done that will make it easier to hire out individual rooms. This will involve putting in a door to separate the coffee bar area from the social area. One of the bigger items still in need of sponsorship or grant funds is the fitting out of a new kitchen.
