McCarthy and Stone’s generous support for Marlborough Youth & Community Centre ahead of its opening

Let the unloading begin - l to r Nicki Beswarick, Liz Griffin, the Town Mayor and Shane PaullLet the unloading begin - l to r Nicki Beswarick, Liz Griffin, the Town Mayor and Shane PaullMcCarthy and Stone, the company building the Canning Place retirement homes at the foot of Granham Hill, have made a major contribution to the Marlborough Community and Youth Centre ahead of its grand opening.  They have donated £15,000 in kind and in money.

In the bitter cold of Friday morning (December 8) the Town Mayor, Councillor Mervyn Hall, and executives from McCarthy and Stone - southern managing director Shane Paull, sales executive for Canning Place Liz Griffin and marketing executive Nicki Beswarick - helped unload some of the £10,000 worth of equipment donated by the company that was arriving throughout the day.

Mr Paull presented Mayor Mervyn Hall with a symbolic cheque for the £5,000 donation that will go towards the overall project and general up-keep of its facilities.

The donated equipment includes over six hundred kitchen items essential to the day-to-day running of the community centre - ranging from tumbler glasses to a dishwasher, as well as an extensive list of furniture including trestle tables, chairs and a Smart television set.

The building had been used for more than 40 years as the town's Youth Centre and due to Wiltshire Council cutbacks it was due to be mothballed this year.  So, Marlborough Town Council took it on under a lease and with the support of McCarthy & Stone, grant funding and the generosity of local businesses and the community it has refurbished the building so that, after a period when it was in some disrepair, it will once again be able to open its doors.

The indoor games court has been refurbished and lined - it will be suitable for badminton, short tennis and similar sports.  The exterior and interior have been re-decorated and the whole building now looks very well looked after.

McCarthy and Stone wanted to ensure the community centre is fully equipped for when it comes to the grand opening on Friday, December 15.

The company is also looking to collaborate with the community centre on a long-term basis by setting up an older persons’ club. The aim of this club will be to encourage local retirees to meet up on a weekly basis for an event or to simply enjoy the facilities with a cup of tea and a chat.

Shane Paull: “As a company, we understand that our responsibility is not only to build quality, purpose-built retirement properties, but also to create a positive legacy in the communities in which we build by showing support to local organisations and groups."

“When we were first made aware of the Marlborough Community and Youth Centre campaign, we knew it was something we wanted to support. It will offer such a vital service to local residents and deserves to have the best equipment available."

The growing pile of donated equipment...including much needed chairsThe growing pile of donated equipment...including much needed chairs"This is about being able to secure the long term future of the centre in Marlborough so that younger generations can benefit. We are also looking at ways we can work together to provide more support for older people in the town, because we know loneliness is a huge problem in later life and something we’re keen to help with in order to reduce this.”

Councillor Mervyn Hall: “It was a pleasure to assist with the unpacking of the generous order for Marlborough Community and Youth Centre that has been provided by McCarthy and Stone. Marlborough has a strong sense of community and I’m thoroughly looking forward to the opening of the community centre on Friday, December 15 - and also to have the support of McCarthy and Stone in the local area.”

McCarthy and Stone's Canning Place development is already proving popular amongst local retirees with its location and facilities. The development will consist of 27 two-bedroom apartments, with landscaped gardens and convenient on-site parking.
Aimed exclusively at people aged 60 and over, the development will provide luxury retirement living, as well as independence in a safe and secure environment.  For anyone interested in the development can phone 0800 3100 383 or visit their website.

Details of the opening of the Marlborough Community and Youth Centre opening will appear on marlborough.news soon.
