Police advice: Only leave home if absolutely necessary

A Snowplough/Gritter makes it's way down an unusually empty High StreetA Snowplough/Gritter makes it's way down an unusually empty High StreetPolice are advising drivers right across Wiltshire to stay home and not to venture out today (Friday 2 March) unless a journey is vital.

Many roads across the County are badly affected this morning with the A346 to the North of Marlborough and the A361 between Wroughton and Beckhampton two of the worst.

Snowdrifts on the Lockeridge to Fyfield roadSnowdrifts on the Lockeridge to Fyfield roadThe A346 was blocked between Chiseldon and Marlborough, as was the A361.  At East Grafton the A338 is unpassable due to snow from the surrounding fields being blown across the road, and in the Alton Barnes area between Pewsey and Devizes abandoned vehicles are blocking the road.

Superintendent Phil Staynings said: “We are doing all that we can to ensure the safety of residents in Wiltshire and as you can imagine, our officers and call handlers, are currently extremely busy.

“We are urging residents to only leave home if absolutely necessary and if you are heading out, please make sure you leave plenty of time, take necessary supplies and always let someone know where you are going and how long you expect to be.

“With these severe weather conditions, it’s also really important to check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours to make sure they are ok.

“Keep up to date with our social media and website for road closures throughout the day.”

Call 101 to report any information or call 999 in an emergency.
