Scouting for Girls to headline the debut Marlborough Rising music festival

The organisers of the first Marlborough Rising music festival have announced the first bookings for the line-up of the inaugural event - over the weekend of 7-9 September.

Headlining the festival will be Scouting for Girls - the popular group who caused a sensation in the town when they made a surprise appearance at the Christmas lights switch on in 2015 - and used the event as the basis for their Christmas video.

Marlborough Rising will be presenting a 'broad church' of music - folk, bop, blues and more.  For the inaugural event they are sticking to the motto 'Keep it simple, do it well'.  Especially after their initial plans were ruled out by security demands - as marlborough.news reported

The organisers say they are '...not re-inventing the wheel, just changing the design of the wheel'.  Their long term aim is to build a festival that will 'fill the town with music' and put its name back on the music map and providing music for everyone.  They are very aware that the 'good health of the High Street' needs nurturing.

Joe StilgoeJoe StilgoeTina May Tina May The first group of bookings to be announced has three more big names:

Joe Stilgoe - an internationally acclaimed singer, pianist and songwriter whose live shows are a mixture of virtuoso musicianship and theatricality.

He combines on the spot improvisation with the quickest of wits.

Singer Tina May - "She has an unerring instinct for how to treat a song - and that is a great rarity.  She's a singer who enhances a song."

On the folk side of the music spectrum, Marlborough Rising has signed Turin Brakes   who have recently unveiled their eighth studio release Invisible Storm: "This is a band in a league of their own - their musicianship is nothing short of mind blowing."

September's first festival will have four main venues: marquees in Priory Gardens and in the Castle & Ball car park, and St Mary's and St Peter's churches.

The festival organisers are determined to make Marlborough Rising inclusive and, thinking long term, they will be holding a Marlborough Rising Stars event for young musicians - probably on the Saturday morning in the main marquee.  St John's, the College, Dauntseys and St Francis have already expressed interest in taking part.

Marlborough Rising is being organised by a new group of music enthusiasts with experience in the music industry and event management - they all live in the town.  One committee member, Robin Pritchard, reports: "So many people tell us they really want a music festival again.  We are from the town and think this is worthwhile for the town."

They are finding new streams of sponsorship and donations.  Further announcements on the line-up, venues and tickets will be made on the Marlborough Rising website (going live shortly), social media and here on marlborough.news

Volunteers to help with the festival - including stewarding - are asked to contact the organisers click here as soon as possible.
