Lift-off for Marlborough Rising as traders look to become involved

"It's going to be a vibrant community focused event" stated chair Robin Pritchard last night (Tuesday 26 June) at a meeting with Marlborough's traders in the Town Hall.  "Something to appeal to everyone, young and old, of every taste" he added.

Robin and the rest of the Marlborough Rising committee hosted the meeting with the traders to detail the outline for the September festival to be held over the weekend of September 7-9.

As reported earlier Marlborough Rising will feature high quality live performances - Joe Stilgoe, Scouting for Girls (a big hit at the Christmas Lights switch-on a couple of years back), Tina May and Turin Brakes will be major headline acts.

Four venues will be used - each with a different theme.  Main stage will be the marquee in Priory Gardens with Scouting for Girls headlining on the Friday, Turin Brakes on Saturday evening, and Joe Stilgoe presenting 'an afternoon of musical entertainment' on the Sunday.

The Castle & Ball will be the Rock and Blues venue, with Roving Crows headlining Friday, Emma Johnson, Wiltshire Blues Sessions and local favourites Barrel House on Saturday, which will be topped by an appearance from Marlborough's favourite Glaswegian Ray Harris.

St Peter's Church will be presenting softer Folk, acoustic and Jazz acts with Brooks Williams returning to Marlborough for the Friday night session frlowed by a Jazz Night on the Saturday, featuring an eclectic line-up - modern and traditional bands and solo artists combining to provide a superb mix for the Jazz enthusiast.

Friday at St Mary's Church will be 'Songs from the Shows' - six West End musical artists taking the audience on a journey from the early Vaudeville and Music Hall era through to current day West End and Broadway classics, with many stops off in between.  Saturday evening at St Mary's will be award-winning vocalist Tina May offering an evening with a 'French flavour', bringing to life the music of France's most beloved entertainer and Musical Legend, Edith Piaf.

So, something for just about every taste.....

There won't be any need for road closures.  Marlborough Rising's aim is to bring business to the town, an objective that was warmly received by the traders present.  "The 'health of the High Street' is vital to the town" stated Robin, reinforcing the purpose that Marlborough Rising is there to nurture the local economy.

Opportunities for joint promotions were discussed, a wide range of questions were posed covering expected numbers, sponsorship opportunities, car parking, pricing and numerous other areas and the reaction from those present was extremely positive.

'Keep it simple'.....'do what we do, very well' is the mantra for the first Marlborough Rising. "We just want to fill the town with music" - sounds easy, but lots of work is being done to make this come true.

Marlborough Rising are appealing for volunteers to help make the festival run smoothly, particularly for Stewards, and if you are interested in lending a hand then click here as soon as possible.
