Action for the River Kennet’s rainscapes project to improve storm water management in towns and villages along the River Kennet has now spread to Ramsbury. Ramsbury Primary School has an innovative new rain garden. So when the downpours finally arrive not a drop of water will be wasted.
Rain gardens improve the management of storm water by catching and cleaning the rainwater before it reaches the river – reducing water pollution and helping to prevent flash flooding.
Award winning garden designer Wendy Allen and a team of volunteers installed the rain garden in May.
Wendy, whose daughter is in Year 1 of Ramsbury Primary School, says: “We’re inspiring the children and residents of Ramsbury to think differently and creatively about rainwater and the water cycle. For example, downpipes don’t have to be boring – they can be colourful, used to grow plants, feature rain chains, or end in a watering can. “
“Our rain garden and stormwater planters feature a Torricelli tube downpipe which squirts out water in arcs and a waterwheel, which the pupils are enjoying as part of their learning and play.”
Charlotte Hitchmough, Director of ARK, commented, “ARK are delighted to have been able to work with Ramsbury Primary School on their rain garden. It’s always a pleasure to work with such a forward looking and energetic team of staff, parents and pupils. We are thrilled to see how much the children are enjoying the new spaces, and it’s reassuring to know that the River Kennet will be healthier as a result of their efforts.”
