Pies, glorious pies….Marlborough’s newest take away

One of Chris Wyatt's signature piesOne of Chris Wyatt's signature piesMarlborough is quickly turning into a foody destination for those looking for alternatives to the High Street supermarket.  Last week marlborough.news highlighted ‘Rudies’ the new micro-bakery in town, 'Packaging not included' - the new zero waste shop due to open shortly in Hughenden Yard and now we have learnt about ‘Pies Pies’, handmade, ready for the oven pies made by Chris Wyatt in his Marlborough kitchen.

Last November Chris decided to make pies to sell through his Facebook page.  He made ninety, they sold out in four hours and Pies Pies was born.  As well as traditional steak and ale and chicken and leek, Chris has experimented with many different ingredients.  His chilli beef and cheddar pie invented for his friend Carly to cure her hangover, has proved very popular.  Other popular pies are  - steak, ale and blue cheese - chicken, leek and smoked pancetta and – chicken, chorizo and cider.

"Were major pie fans in our house I can't wait to try them"“Traditional pies always seem to have the same ingredients so I wanted to think outside the box and create some new ones.  I’m currently experimenting with a tandoori chicken tikka pie which has an onion bhaji in the middle of the top.  I’m creating two sharing beef wellingtons for Valentine’s Day.”

Chris, who has been a chef for over fifteen years, and cooked for many celebrities in his time, is currently a larder chef at Marlborough College:  “I love being a chef but I’ve always wanted to sell my own products and have my own business.  I like making products and I love pies.”

In fact he has always loved pies – so much so that when he was at school he earned the nickname ‘pie’.  “That was before I slimmed down through training hard for Marlborough Town FC,” explained Chris.

The pies cost £4 each, and give a generous adult portion.  They are filled with fresh local ingredients.  The meat comes from Andrews Butchers and the vegetables from the market.  Chris often uses ox cheek and shin as he finds these cuts when slow cooked are tender and moist.

A few weeks ago he was invited to BBC Wiltshire and was interviewed on ‘The Social’, a Monday evening show which promotes local online businesses.  Chris treated presenter Sue Kinnear from BBC Wiltshire with a few pie samples to taste.  ‘Simply the BEST pies I’ve ever tasted,’ she posted later on his Facebook page.

Marlborough.news can also confirm that the pies are extremely tasty!

Chris has plans to introduce tarts and quiches for the summer months and is looking for a larger kitchen in Marlborough in order to expand his business

Every Friday Chris posts what pies will be available.  The pies can be collected or delivered to the local area.  They can be cooked from frozen in thirty five to forty minutes.  Customers wishing to buy pies should message Chris on the Pies, Pies Facebook page or contact him by phone on 07557090762.
