Sustainable Living Event coming to a village hall near you…

Kate Myrie of Sustainable ChoicesKate Myrie of Sustainable ChoicesWorried about the effects of climate change?  Want to make more environmentally friendly choices in your everyday life?  Ex St John’s student Kate Myrie has organised a Sustainable Living Event to support, encourage and educate people to make these choices.  The Sustainable Living Event will be held on March 23 from 10 am to 4pm in Shrivenham Memorial Hall. Entrance is free.

The event will include stalls offering sustainable products and food from the local area, as well as clothes and book swap stations, recycling information and eco-accessories.  Tips and products to help you reduce plastic waste in your everyday life will be available.

There will be workshops and demonstrations from experts on topics such as: how to grow and preserve your own food, where to go for free repairs for your bike or other beloved belongings, and how to upcycle items you thought were destined for landfill.

Some of Kate's Sustainable choices - repairing clothes, face cleansing pads, natural fibre exfoliating bag shampoo bar, using old T shirts and towels instead of kitchen rollSome of Kate's Sustainable choices - repairing clothes, face cleansing pads, natural fibre exfoliating bag shampoo bar, using old T shirts and towels instead of kitchen rollWantage Repair Café, Indigo, The Health Box, Smart Greens Aquaponics, SESI Refill and E-Motion are just some of the organisations attending. There will be plenty of child friendly activities too.

A photography competition on the theme of mankind’s impact on the environment is also being held.  The deadline for submissions is Friday March 8.  The winner will receive a signed limited edition print of a winning image in the British Wildlife Photography Award 2018 taken by Paul Colley.

Kate Myrie told marlborough.news:  “The one thing that was glaringly obvious when I started out trying to live more sustainably, is how much research you need to do before you even start.  But it is all out there - it’s just a case of pulling it all together so people can see what’s available to them.”

“There is a fantastic network of people locally who are offering all the tools and information you need to make simple changes in your everyday life that can benefit the planet.  Together with afantastic group of community volunteers, I have put together the Sustainable Living Event to share that information.”

Kate’s Facebook page - Sustainable Choices also includes plenty of advice for busy people to make small changes to benefit the environment.  “A lot of people feel if they can’t do it all they can’t do any but it’s better to do a little than to do none.”

Kate hopes that the Shrivenham Sustainable Living Event will be the first of many in the area and further afield.  “I want to help other communities to build their own local network of businesses, individuals and organisations that provide sustainable and environmentally friendly options.”

“Inventive, easy ways to make changes to your everyday living habits which benefit our natural environment can also be good for your bank balance!”
