Schools out for Climate Change - students to strike on Friday

Young marchers at the front of the recent Extinction Rebellion march on Marlborough High StreetYoung marchers at the front of the recent Extinction Rebellion march on Marlborough High StreetStudents from Marlborough schools will join the international school strike on Friday morning, 24 May, gathering at the Town Hall to protest against government inaction on climate change.

Inspired by Greta Thunberg, 16-year old climate activist whose actions and words have caught the moment, pupils from St John's, Marlborough College and other Primary schools in the area are expected to join together to demand that national governments around the world act now on the climate emergency.

They will walk out of their lessons and gather at the Town Hall at 11.30am.  They will return to school by 1.15pm.  Their protest echoes Thunberg’s argument that education is pointless if there is no future for the next generation.

The Marlborough school strike is being supported by the Devizes and Marlborough Extinction Rebellion group, which held a protest two weeks ago that brought Marlborough’s Saturday morning traffic to a standstill.  More information can be found on the group's Facebook page: Extinction Rebellion Devizes and Marlborough.
