Aldbourne declares a Climate Emergency

Aldbourne Parish Council has declared a climate emergency to acknowledge the seriousness of the threat posed by climate change. The council has agreed to “encourage and support the community of Aldbourne to become carbon neutral by 2030”.

Aldbourne Parish Council is not alone in their concerns and their declaration follows similar declarations made by the UK government and many councils across the UK. Wiltshire County Council declared a climate emergency in February and was recently named 'most climate-friendly council in England and Wales' by Friends of the Earth.

The climate emergency motion passed by Aldbourne Parish Council was proposed by a new group in the village, Carbon Neutral Aldbourne, which was set up by residents who are concerned about climate change.

Ros Oswald, from Carbon Neutral Aldbourne, said: “This is a fantastic result for Aldbourne which really demonstrates the council's commitment to the residents of Aldbourne and future generations. Recognising that this is a climate emergency and putting in place plans to cut emissions as quickly as possible is crucial at this stage.”

“We plan to help people to do this in a variety of ways including helping them to switch energy suppliers, identifying opportunities for generating renewable energy and encouraging tree planting.”

“Cutting carbon is a major part of what we want to achieve but we also believe that this is about far more than carbon emissions. The recent loss of biodiversity is shocking and we want to work with people in and around the village to make the most of our green spaces and to create a village where people and other species thrive.”

Carbon Neutral Aldbourne recently launched their Carbon Footprinting project which aims to calculate a baseline figure for Aldbourne's current emissions. This will help to set meaningful reduction targets and measure progress each year.

Our carbon footprint is a way of showing our carbon emissions. There are a number of different factors that affect the size of our carbon footprint. The food we eat, how and where we travel and how we power our home all contribute to our impact on the planet.

If you live in Aldbourne you can take part in the project by visiting the group's website.
