Climate Change isn't just for the younger generation - U3A addresses the issues facing us all
“Climate Change and Sustainable Futures” is the focus of a Special Interest Day on 5 May that is being organised by U3A Kennet in Marlborough, involving a panel of qualified climatologists and scientists who will provide both a balanced but also a positive outlook on the dramatic global climate changes that we are experiencing directly or witnessing through the media.
U3A Kennet in Marlborough is part of a UK-wide movement of retired and semi-retired people who come together to develop their learning, social and creative interests in a friendly and informal environment.
Speakers at the day-long event will include Penny Tranter from the Meteorological Office, who will tackle the question of whether climate change is real; Robin Stafford Allen, formerly with the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, will speak on the potential for fusion power; Peter Edwards from Oxford University speaking on the Circular Carbon Economy; and Dr Katherine Steentjes from Cardiff University will offer society’s current perceptions of climate change and support for low carbon lifestyles.
According to Randal Richards, a retired physical chemist, and a member of the U3A in Kennet’s Science Technology Group, “This Special Interest Day, which is generously supported by Marlborough College, reflects the older generation’s own concerns and worries about climate change and will hopefully demonstrate to the younger generation that we truly share their concern about the destructive effects on all parts of our planet wreaked by evolving climate changes.
“Most of us in the U3A are parents, grandparents and even great grandparents, so it is natural that we view our offspring’s future in the natural world with real concern. However, our Special Interest Day, which is open to all U3A Kennet members, we hope will also offer some positive options and outlooks from many of our speakers. This is also an opportunity for other local retired or semi-retired people to join the U3A.”
The U3A Kennet 'Special Interest Day on Climate Change' will take place on Tuesday 5 May at Marlborough College. Tickets are available for both existing and new U3A members.
