In the splendid setting of the Somerset Cricket Ground in Taunton the Mayor, Councillor Noel Barrett-Morton accepted, on behalf of the Town, a Silver Gilt award and the South West Tourism Association Cup in recognition of this year’s entry for ‘Marlborough in Bloom’ in the South West in Bloom competition.
It turned out to be a busy day for the Mayor, as he was summoned to the stage again to accept the Shaun Gregan Cup from Lord Julian Fellowes on behalf of Vyv Scott, landlord of ‘The Lamb’ in the parade whose magnificent floral display was judged the best in a pub anywhere across the entire South West region. A fantastic achievement given the number of pubs all competing for this accolade.
There was exceptional success also for Marlborough in the ‘In Your Neighbourhood’ awards, where out of the twelve entries by volunteer groups across the Town, four achieved the very top level of ‘Outstanding’, two achieved the next level of ‘Thriving’ and five achieved the third level of ‘Advancing’. Details of the entries and awards are set out below.
One ‘Outstanding’ entry, the Waterfront at Kennet Place created by Val Compton and The Marlborough Waterfront Association went even further – Val was the Joint Winner of the London and Manchester Trophy for an Outstanding Environmental Initiative – was described by Judge Tim Eley as “One of the best It’s Your Neighbourhood’s we have ever seen.
