The Town Hall - seat of Marlborough's Town CouncilThe Town Hall - seat of Marlborough's Town CouncilMarlborough Town Council has launched a ‘recruitment drive’ for prospective Town Councillors.

If you live anywhere within three miles of the the Marlborough Parish boundary (covering Marlborough and Manton) and you feel that you have the drive and desire to help the community by getting involved, then this might for you.

“It’s a real opportunity – a chance to make changes and influence what happens in your community” said Town Clerk, Shelley Parker.  “There’s likely to be some tough decisions to take and real changes to make.”

The role is essentially as the representative of the people within the ward for which a Councillor is elected.  It is real grassroots democracy, dealing with issues that arise within the ward as well as serving the Marlborough area as a whole. Becoming involved in decisions that affect everyone in the community such as planning, public amenities and local grant awards, whilst also playing a leading role in the regular ceremonial and community events such as the Christmas lights switch-on, and Remembrance Day Parade.

Party Politics shouldn’t be an issue as most Councillors would regard themselves as ‘Independent’, aiming to serve the needs of those in their ward rather than the colour of a rosette.

“The need for committed community-minded Councillors is vital” explained the Town Clerk. “Our Unitary Authority, Wiltshire Council, is receiving less from central Government whilst aiming to maintain high levels of service for the care of our most vulnerable” she added.  “This means that there is a knock-on effect on the Town Council as some local services are reduced, and local decisions, at Town Council level become ever more important.”

Elections take place on Thursday 4 May.  Interested and want to find out more?  Then click here
