Pewsey Primary headteacher chosen for key national school support role

Nicola GilbertNicola GilbertThe headteacher and staff at Pewsey Primary School have been selected for a top role supporting schools in challenging circumstances.

Headteacher Nicola Gilbert has been appointed to the role of national leader of education (NLE).

NLEs - along with staff in their school, which is designated a national support school (NSS) - use their success and professionalism to provide additional leadership capability in other schools requiring support.

This highly acclaimed role comes after the recent inspection of Pewsey Primary by Ofsted where the school was judged as continuing to be a good school.

The report findings praised the school’s strong leadership team for the way they are “continually searching out ways to improve the school,” and as a result, outcomes at the end of key stage 2 are “consistently high over a number of years.”

In addition to Pewsey Primary’s headteacher taking on the NLE role, the school’s chairman of the governing body, Peter McGuigan, is a National Leader of Governance.

Mrs Gilbert said:  “We are extremely fortunate here at Pewsey Primary to have a strong leadership team with expertise across our staff and the Governors of the school.

“The role of a National Support School will enable us to share our knowledge and skills with other schools in Wiltshire and we are very excited to be able to do this.”

Roger Pope, chairman of the National College for Teaching and Leadership, said: “It’s fantastic that heads like Nicola Gilbert have the passion and ambition to help improve the life chances of young people, not just in their own but in other schools as well.

“The aim of national leaders of education is to drive improvement in underperforming schools. We now have over 1,200 NLEs and we’re working to increase this number further to spread educational excellence everywhere.”
