Work has begun to prepare the site for the start next year of the construction of the radiotherapy unit at Great Western Hospital.
The groundwork is expected to be finished by the summer of 2017. The unit is due to open in 2019.
The centre will provide patients in Wiltshire and Swindon lifesaving cancer treatment that is now unavailable in the local area. At the moment patients have to travel daily to Bath, Oxford or Cheltenham for courses of radiotherapy.
Funding for this project is being raised by GWH’s Brighter Futures charity. Their Radiotherapy Appeal has so far raised £1.2million toward the £2.9million target.
The centre will be run by Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
