Claire Perry MP says Grenfell Tower cladding "substandard"
The Prime Minister has announced that within 48-hours we will learn from the fire service whether the cladding on Grenfell Tower met safety standards. It was the cladding that is believed to have turned a small intenal fire into a blaze that engulfed the whole building.
In the meantime, Devizes MP Claire Perry has gone record saying that the problem was "the use of substandard materials".
Whether this means the actual material used was from a substandard batch, or whether it means that the type of material did not meet fire standards is unclear.
Today (June 22) the government withdrew its advice to journalists that 600 tower blocks had "similar" cladding to that on Grenfell Tower. It was later clarified that the Downing Street spokesperson should have said that 600 tower blocks have cladding of some kind.
