Marlborough Quakers' plea to Claire PerryIndividual members of the Marlborough Quaker Meeting, concerned about British arms sales, in particular to Saudi Arabia, have sent a letter to Claire Perry requesting her to sign Parliamentary Petition 1079. The contents of the letter are as follows:
"Dear Claire Perry
A plea for support against the Arms Trade
As the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) arms fair arrives in London again from 12th to 15th September we feel compelled to write to you for your support to make sure this exhibition does not take place again.
Our government’s continued licensing of export of military equipment to “countries of concern” identified in the 2014-2015 Human rights and democracy report is hypocritical and immoral.
We talk about human rights but if a country or regime buys arms from us then it seems we can conveniently turn a blind eye to the destruction and suffering wrought by such weapons. The close relationship between the government, military and big businesses has resulted in arms sales being prioritised over arms control, and business prioritised over human rights.
You can help stop this by signing the Parliamentary Petition 1079 to reduce the abuses of the ‘revolving door’ between ministerial office, the military and big businesses.
Surely the resources, skills and ingenuity in our country can be put to better use for a more humane, kinder and secure future by investing in the renewable energy industry and farming for food security.
Thank you for your attention and continued good work with our constituency."
