Written by Neil Goodwin.

Police are appealing to the public for witnesses after a man died in a road traffic collision near Avebury yesterday afternoon.

The two-vehicle fatal collision happened on the A4361, approximately one mile north of Avebury at Winterbourne Bassett, at around 6.30pm yesterday (30 November).

For reasons unknown, a white Ford Focus collided with a grey Land Rover Freelander, causing both vehicles to leave the road.

The driver of the Ford Focus, a local man in his 50s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for a number of hours to allow enquiries to take place and reopened at around 2.30am this morning (1 December 2018).

Officers from the Collision Investigation Unit are now investigating the crash and have urged any witnesses who have not yet made contact with the police to ring 101.

Were you in the area around the time of the crash?  Did you see either of the vehicles beforehand?

Anyone with information should contact PC Richard Hatch from Wiltshire Police on 101, quoting Log 255 of 30/11/18.
