Merlin Court care home 'requires improvement'

Following an inspection in May, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has given Marlborough's Merlin Court care home the overall rating of 'requires improvement'.
In 2016, when the CQC last inspected Merlin Court, they found it 'Good' on all counts.  This time it was given 'Good' as regards being a safe, caring and responsive service, but that it 'requires improvement' to make it an effective and well-led service.

The CQC found that people were not always supported to have maximum choice and control over their lives, as it was not clear that staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible.

Also people were not being supported by robust safeguarding systems. Not all incidents of alleged abuse had been reported to the local authority. The registered manager had also not submitted notifications to the CQC when required to do so.

Merlin Court - beside Marlborough Common - is a purpose-built residential home for older people, some of whom live with dementia. There are 62 bedrooms and various communal areas including a cinema, hair salon, lounges, café area and dining rooms. At the time of the inspection there were 50 people living at the home.

Merlin Court is run by Avery Homes (Nelson) Limited. The full report can be read here.
