Fire service ‘don’t drink and drive’ pre-Christmas roadshow coming to Marlborough High Street

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) is supporting the pre-Christmas ‘don’t drink and drive’ campaign, in partnership with Wiltshire Council and Wiltshire Police.

The road safety teams will be out and about in the coming weeks, landing in Marlborough High Street on Weds 11 December between 10am and 2pm meeting with local people and encouraging them to plan their festive journeys.

Using a crashed car display to highlight the risks of thoughtless or dangerous driving, the teams will be urging people to use designated drivers or taxis to stay safe on the roads during the Christmas period.

Representatives from 'Turning Point', a charity that helps people with drug and alcohol issues, will also be there.

Christine Sharma, road safety manager for DWFRS, said: “With Christmas parties looming, we know people will be out and about a lot more, so we really want them to plan their journey and not put themselves at risk.  It’s not just about drinking and driving in the same evening, it’s about being aware that you can still be over the limit well into the following day.”

She added: “It’s not possible to say how much alcohol you can drink and stay below the limit, as everyone is different.  Your weight, gender, age and metabolism all play a part, as do stress levels, what you’ve eaten recently, and even the type of alcohol you’re consuming.  The only way to be sure you don’t go over the limit is to have none for the road.”
