Saved! Outdoor education continues in WiltshireFollowing Wiltshire Council's decision in March 2018 to stop providing outdoor education, both local sites have been saved and will be run by independent organisations.
Since 1 October, Oxenwood - near Marlborough - is being run by Community First/Youth Action Wiltshire, a charity based in Devizes.
Now the Council have announced they have exchanged contracts on the larger facility, Braeside in Devizes. An official handover to new owners Classes Abroad is expected on 31 January 2020.
The Council's statement said: "The popular site has continued to offer schools and groups a range of activities including high level ropes, science, canoeing, abseiling and zipwire as well as Able, Gifted and Talented enrichment sessions."
Rupert Tabley is Director of Classes Abroad: “We are committed to running Braeside in its current format and keeping as much of the activities and culture as we can but of course we want to add to it - but all these additions will be an enhancement to the local community."
"We have worked with a number of special needs groups who will be benefitting from this centre next year.”
The county's Outdoor Education was saved after a prolonged campaign by parents and opposition parties.
