Having just met with Redrow executives, the Marlborough Town Council planning committee went into formal session and among other business, considered the 'reserved matters' application from Redrow for the Salisbury Road development.  This would almost certainly be the last chance to influence the development.

At a Devizes constituency election hustings in St Mary's Church on Tuesday evening (May 30), the Conservative candidate Claire Perry, ruled out introducing grammar schools in Wiltshire.  

 

Mrs Perry, who was educated at a comprehensive school, told the audience of about 175 people: "I don't see the need for grammar schools in this rural constituency."  The Conservative manifesto does not say the government will build new grammar schools, but it does say: "We will lift the ban on the establishment of selective schools..."

Marlborough St Mary’s the main winner at the Area Board

The new Marlborough St Mary’s school was awarded a grant of £11,638 from the Community Area Grants Scheme at last night’s (23 May) Area Board meeting to go towards the purchase of interactive white boards.  This represents approximately one-third of the overall cost of this equipment.

According to Cath Black, Head of IT at the new school, introduction of these new energy-efficient white boards will enable teachers to create eye-catching teaching materials and will promote a style of active visual-based teaching and learning that will make the classroom fun for both teacher and student.  The new boards will be installed in time for the opening of the new school in September.

Regulator finds Coombe End Court care home still in need of improvement

 

A new report from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) on the Coombe End care home in London Road, Marlborough still gives it an overall rating of "requires improvement" - but emphasises that the service it provides is "caring".


This report (May 25) follows one in April 2015 which rated the home's service as 'inadequate' and imposed 'enforcement action' on various issues.  The follow-up inspection in January 2016 found that the home still required improvements.

Two senior executives from Redrow, the developers for the Salisbury Road housing, came to answer questions from the Marlborough Town Council planning committee on Tuesday (May 30.)   

This meeting saw three important developments in the scheme. However at their planning committee meeting, councillors were unhappy with the mix of housing types and are seeking a revision - see above for separate story .

New Town Council agrees lease for the Youth Centre

Now that Wiltshire Council have no use for Marlborough's Youth Centre - after, that is, it becomes a General Election polling station on June 8 - the new Town Council agreed at its first full meeting (May 22) to sign a lease on the building.

The lease from Wiltshire Council will be for a peppercorn rent and the idea is that eventually Wiltshire Council will transfer the building to the town council for good under its Capital Asset Transfer scheme - which is currently in abeyance.
