Bursting with books: Marlborough's Mayor cuts the ribbon to declare Preshute Primary School's new library open

Mayor Councillor Mervyn Hall, accompanied by Year 6 pupils with their reception buddies and head teacher Claire Graham cuts the ribbon to declare the new Library openMayor Councillor Mervyn Hall, accompanied by Year 6 pupils with their reception buddies and head teacher Claire Graham cuts the ribbon to declare the new Library open

There’s a buzz about books at Preshute Primary School as the school’s new library opens for business.

Cutting the ribbon and officially opening the library, Mayor Councillor Mervyn Hall said, “I think books are very important to children.  They introduce them to storytelling and are a source of information to help them with their school work.  I’m greatly in favour of paper books.  They are colourful and easier to interface with than a screen.”

Local author, Debi Evans and the star of her books, Rolo the dog, were also on hand to assist with the opening.

The Preshute Parent Support Association have raised over £5000 for new library books through a variety of events throughout the year.

Debi Evans and the pupils from year 6 and receptionJess Knowles deputy head, told marlborough.news:  “The idea was to raise the profile of reading and to instil a love of reading.  The old library books were well worn.”

In order to give the children ownership of the new library Jess consulted members of the School Council.

“They found out which authors each year group liked and which non-fiction topics they were interested in.  I have also tried to buy sets of books so the children can get hooked on an author and work their way through the set.”

Over 2000 books ranging from picture books to non-fiction, to more challenging fiction for top juniors have already been bought.  More are on their way.

The pupils have been busy sampling the new stock but had to wait for the official opening before being allowed to take them home.

Claire Graham, headteacher, said, “The parents have been really generous and the PPSA have been incredible with their fundraising.  A big thank you to the Mayor, and to Debi and Rolo for opening our library today.”
