From Little Acorns Great Oaks GrowSt Katharine’s C of E(VC) Primary School, situated in the Savernake Forest next to St Katharine’s Church, is looking for some ‘little acorns’ to join its reception class in September 2018.
Headteacher, Niki Jones, told marlborough.news, “We are a nurturing school. We strive hard and achieve high academic standards. We take a creative approach to our curriculum and find ways to make learning exciting and enjoyable.”
The school has extensive grounds and staff and pupils make the most of these surroundings. “We build outdoor learning into the regular curriculum whenever possible. Pupils experience the different seasons, write poetry about the incredible cobwebs on the trees on a winter’s morning, study newts and frogs in the ponds, and engage in forest art.”
“Last term we ran a very successful Den Day for Save the Children. The children built dens, learnt about the importance of shelter, the refugee crisis and raised money.”
Historically St. Katherine’s served the workers of the Savernake Estate but now children from a wide catchment area attend. Children in the catchment area are entitled to free transport. There are several after school clubs. The nearby Savernake Avenue Nursery and Grafton Sunflower Nursery offer before and after school childcare .
St Katharine’s has 101 pupils in four classes, Hazel, Oak, Chestnut and Sycamore. The forest theme is also reflected in the school’s motto : “From little acorns great oaks grow.”
Niki believes that children in a small school become very confident as they have lots of opportunities to come to the front and shine. “Small schools give pupils the opportunity to discover things about themselves that in a larger environment they might not be able to access. And of course in small schools children are extremely well known.”
As a C of E school there are links with St Katharine’s church next door. Year 6 led the Remembrance Day Service and the school choir will sing at the Nine Lessons and Carol Service in December. There will be a special service in the church on St. Katharine’s Day on Friday November 24th.
The school has recently joined the Excalibur Academy Trust which will facilitate more collaboration with other schools and more opportunities for staff development.
Closing date for applications is noon on January 15 2018. More information can be found on www.st-katharines-savernake.wilts.sch.uk
