Santa’s Workshop – a festive play for all the family by St John's students in aid of Hannah's Trees charity

Year 10 St John’s Students - Wendy, the wind-up doll and Jessie the cowboyYear 10 St John’s Students - Wendy, the wind-up doll and Jessie the cowboySt John’s BTEC Performing Arts Tech Award students are performing ‘Santa’s Workshop’ on Tuesday 12 December at 6.30pm in Marlborough Town Hall and Wednesday 13 December at St John’s Theatre on the Hill and raising money for the charity Hannah’s Trees in the process.

Mrs Matyla, Head of Drama at St. John’s told marlborough.news:  “The play takes place in Santa’s workshop on Christmas Eve where the toys compete over who is the best toy.  There are ballerinas, teddy bears, clowns, wind-up dolls, cowboys, robots.  There’s lots of singing and dancing and it has cheerful festive ending.”

“Students have designed and made their own costumes and are in charge of the sound and lighting.  Over thirty students are participating.  We are very pleased to be able to perform the play in the Town Hall, as well as St. John’s.  The Town Hall, has a lovely festive atmosphere with the Christmas tree and the town lights outside.”

A Year 10 student who plays Wendy the wind-up doll, whose costume has been a real family collaborative effort, said “I love making people smile.  The play has a lovely moral, a nice story and watching it is an ideal way to start your Christmas festivities.”

The BTEC Performing Arts Tech Award is a new course this year and students have responded well.  Jessie the cowboy, another Year 10 student, said:  “The course offers a lot of opportunities and it feels like we are all a family, working together.”

Tickets are available from Ticket Source  and cost £7.50 for adults, £5 concessions.

Half of all profits will go to the charity Hannah’s Trees, a charity set up in the memory of Hannah Owen who sadly passed away aged just 13 on the 9 December 2009 from a brain tumour recurrence.  Hannah’s favourite time of year was Christmas and the charity celebrates her life by sharing the magic of Christmas with children and young adults who have a life limiting or terminal illness.
