Golf professional, Simon Amor and members of the Marlborough Golf Club’s Juniors Committee are busy encouraging the next generation of golfers. Year 2 and Year 5 pupils at Marlborough St Mary’s have been treated to a golf taster afternoon in school, and now several pupils are enjoying an after-school club at Marlborough Golf Club and holiday sessions.
The project has seen over one hundred children exposed to golf as a sport. Juniors Committee chair Sheila Hubie told marlborough.news, “A lot of people think golf is inaccessible for kids but it’s not. We have plenty of equipment they can use to try out and see if they like it.”
“We want to take the club out into the local community to get the message across that we are here for everyone and our super clubhouse and practice facilities are theirs to be enjoyed – you don’t have to be a member.”
The St. Mary’s pupils are being taught the three main shots, the grip, the swing, the stance, what the different clubs do and the distances they can hit. They have been experiencing three different areas – the driving range, the putting green and the chipping area. And of course they have been made aware of safety issues.
“They have also learned good etiquette and discipline as well as golf skills,” commented Committee member, Roger Henry.
As well as the after school club, pupils are allowed to take lessons on a Saturday morning and can come up to use the driving range at any time. The Club hope that the youngsters will be inspired to join Marlborough Golf Club, and perhaps their parents might also be interested in taking up golf.
According to Sheila, “The beauty of golf is it’s for all ages.”
‘Golf really is a game for life,” Committee member Barrie Reardon Smith commented.
