Electric cars from eco factories – St. John’s leads the way in Engineering Development Trust project

The winning St John's teamThe winning St John's teamOn Tuesday (5 June) St John's Year 8 and Year 9 students presented the fruits of their ten week Go4SET, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) project to industry experts and defended the choices they had made.

One of the St John’s teams presenting truimphed to achieve the 'Best Overall' Award against strong competition from schools in trhe Gloucester and Swindon hubs.


Winning displayWinning displayGary England, St John’s teacher and STEM Co-ordinator said, “Year 8 and 9 students have worked incredibly hard on the project which involved researching, designing and modelling.  Our teams chose to develop Eco-factories that manufacture electric cars.  They incorporated renewable energies, sustainable living features, workplace environment details, sustainable materials and more into their designs and models.”

Go4SET is run by EDT (Engineering Development Trust) with the aim to help students understand STEM application in a real-world setting, developing links with local industry in the process.  The Trust also hopes the project might help inspire more pupils to pursue careers in Science, Engineering and Technology.

Will Callaghan made up the winning St John’s team.  “They answered questions with great composure.  I was very proud of all the students who participated,” said Gary England.
