Headteacher Judith Arkwright said, “In 2015 we implemented a daily run for all the children to raise their self-esteem, enhance well-being and improve health and physical fitness at St Michael’s.  We currently use a small playground, but by adding an all-weather track, we can ensure physical activity is available all year round to all our children.”

It’s a good way to get into sport in a gentle way.”

And the number of entrants into the annual Aldbourne Fun Run who are under eighteen has increased as well.  This year forty-seven percent of entrants were school students. Even pre-schoolers were able to complete the 5K run because of the training they get from the mile a day at school.

The cost of the all-weather track is £19,000. £4,000 was raised by the Aldbourne Fun Run, and another £10,000 from a community award.  Friends of St. Michael’s have been busy fund raising for the remainder through quiz nights, school discos, popcorn club, a Burns Night Ceilidh and the Christmas Fayre.

“There has been a lot of participation in the events.  There is a good community spirit in Aldbourne,”commented Alex.

The school is delighted to have been chosen asone of three local community projects for a Bags of Help grant from Tesco.  During July and August at Tesco Marlborough shoppers can use the blue and red tokens given out at the checkout to vote for St Michael’s running track.  Each token will add to the donation Tesco will make.

It is hoped that the running track will be completed in time for the new September term.  “The all weather track will be a great facility for the whole community,” says Alex.  “It will be a proper track for athletics and I am starting an Aldbourne running club which will also incorporate the Couch to 5K NHS scheme.”
