No more coal, no more oil, keep our carbon in the soil. Whose future ? Our future. St John’s academy student climate change group joined the voice of thousands at the Youth Strike 4 Climate event in Bristol last Friday February 29. L ed by Greta Thunberg they marched through the streets of Bristol undeterred by the appalling weather – in itself indicative of global warming.
St John’s head girl Holly McKay told Marlborough.news, “Greta was amazing. The atmosphere was great even though it was raining. There were a few different speakers all our age group. There were even toddlers there which was really emotive – it’s their future.”
This was echoed by sixth-former Maija Potts. “Greta is so impressive, she’s so young yet she has accomplished so much, it’s inspiring for us. Because we can’t vote it’s important to have a voice.”
Jonny Friend, Head of Science, Environmental Change Leader and UN accredited climate change teacher said, “What I loved was the passion and energy from the young people present. People in every building we went past were so supportive. There was a great feeling of being at one with each other. Even the builders were using their drills in time to the chants!”
“It was such a great opportunity to show how passionate we are,” said Sophie Davies. “It was so rainy and muddy but we didn’t care. This shows how keen we are to do something about climate change. And after the march it was noticeable – no litter was left !”
