Pink cricket weekend raises £1,000 for cancer unit

In the pink: the Saturday teams...and umpireIn the pink: the Saturday teams...and umpireBurbage & Easton Royal Cricket Club’s first ever Pink Weekend was a resounding success both on and off the pitch.

On Saturday (May 26) the 1st XI won their league game against Cheltenham.   And more importantly it raised £1,000 for the Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity and their cancer unit where the club's former chairman Marek Grabowski was treated.  He had been instrumental in the club's revival.  He died last year.

The idea was simple: both teams wore pink caps, the stumps were painted pink, the spectators wore pink and even the umpires joined in with a pink shirt each.  While the game was underway they collected donations and sold raffle tickets to raise funds for the charity.  The weekend was sponsored by Moonies of Pewsey.

While the cricket was serious on the Saturday, the Sunday saw a more relaxed atmosphere as they played an inter-club fixture featuring a great mix of the clubs senior members.

As one of the organisers told marlborough.news: "It was an incredible weekend - enjoyed by everyone at the club.  We would like to thank everyone who donated money or raffle prizes and who sponsored or supported the event.  We couldn’t have done it without you."

Those unable to attend the games and would still like to donate, can do so here.
