Cricket: Devizes v Marlborough - Wookey puts Marlborough in a hole
West Of England Premier League (Wilts Division)
Devizes v Marlborough 18th July 2015
Devizes 283 - 8; Marlborough 214 all out
Devizes won by 69 runs
Another all round poor Marlborough team performance saw the Forest outfit succumb to their second successive defeat at Devizes on Saturday. The result sees Marlborough slip to 3rd place in the Wiltshire table as both of their title challengers Westbury and Trowbridge both won.
Marlborough having lost the toss were put in to the field and were very quickly under the Devizes cosh. Devizes Captain Joe Wookey opening with Tom Grant both scored freely off some poor short length bowling from Marlborough and had taken the score to 34 when Grant was superbly caught by Peter Day in the slips off Dave West’s bowling. The Marlborough success was short lived as Wookey with the incoming Tom Shaw proceeded to dispatch the Marlborough attack to all points of the ground.
The pair took the score to 163 with their 129 run partnership before Wookey was eventually dismissed for 60. Any hopes that Marlborough had that with the partnership broken they would be able to reel Devizes back in was short lived as new batsman Tim Saye, first with Shaw and then with the support of the Devizes low middle order, continued in the same fashion and plundered a further 120 runs to take Devizes to 283 at the close of their Innings.
Wookey’s 60 came off 84 balls, Shaw’s 78 off 99 and Saye’s 64 off 49. Devizes knocked 33 boundaries off the Marlborough’s well below par bowling attack with Saye scoring 10 of them including four 6’s in his explosive innings. Marlborough’s Brad Frost ended with 4 for 54 and some resemblance of respectability as did Fraser Gordon and his 1 for 36 off his 10 overs.
Marlborough in reply were again quickly shown how badly they had bowled as the Devizes attack bowled a tight line and length and restricted the Marlborough batsmen George Penfold and Gordon allowing them only 13 runs before Penfold was dismissed in the 6th over by Tom Grant.
Marlborough’s situation got no better when Gordon was dismissed 3 overs later with only 3 more runs added to the Scoreboard and with Marlborough way behind the run rate the Marlborough batting succumbed to some very lazy poor shots as they tried to pick up the run rate. Only Peter Day who finished with 55 off 103 balls batted with any determination as wickets fell around him at the other end. James Richardson was next to depart for 0 then Arran Dickinson (4), Ben Lambert (3), George Fox (8), Joe Arkwright (9) and finally Day for 55 as Marlborough collapsed to 120 for 8.
Marlborough playing for batting points only at this stage had a slight recovery as Frost then blasted 59 off 40 balls and in a partnership with Dave West (32) for the 9th wicket they added a further 94 to the total. Marlborough ended 69 runs short when they were dismissed for 214.
Marlborough Captain Arran Dickinson said after the game that it was a very bad result for his side which has seriously knocked their title challenge.
“Devizes batted and bowled very well and all credit to Tom (Wookey) and his lads for a very well deserved win. We on the other hand played very poorly and we will need to put this right very quickly if we are to rescue a title challenge from here. We are not out of it yet but I think it’s fair to say we are now the outsiders of the three.
