Match Report

West Of England Premier League (Wilts Division)

Marlborough v Calne  1st August 2015

Marlborough 247-7;   Calne 165 all out

Marlborough won by 82 runs

Brad Frost in fine form on Saturday against CalneBrad Frost in fine form on Saturday against CalneMarlborough ended their recent run of bad results with an 82 run win away at Calne on Saturday.  The win takes the forest outfit back to second place in the league but 36 points behind division leaders Trowbridge.

Marlborough having been asked to bat first got off to a good steady start and had taken the score to 57 before Ben Head was caught by Andrew Wilson off the bowling of Tom Crosby for 24.

Mark Wingfield-Digby with the incoming Arran Dickinson continued to bat well and took Marlborough to the drinks break without further loss.  The pair had added a further 56 to the total when Wingfield-Digby was dismissal for 44 in the 30th over.

Dickinson and Peter Day continued to tick the scoreboard over and further building a good foundation with wickets in hand for the onslaught in the last 10 overs.  Dickinson was dismissed in the 40th over for 43 with the score on 158.

Hard hitting Kiwi Brad Frost then came to the crease and pushed hard down on the accelerator scoring 48 off 28 balls and taking the score to 232 in partnership first with Day (35) then James Richardson (13) and finally George Penfold (10).  Marlborough added 88 runs to their total off the last 10 overs to finish on 247.

Calne in response got off to a slow steady start despite the early loss of James Watson for 8.  Jordan Butler and Sean Adams kept Calne’s steady start going but as they slowly fell behind the run rate the pair began to look to pick up the scoring rate and in doing so started to take some risks with the bat.  Butler was next to go off the bowling of Will Langton for 19 and with the departure of Butler Calne wickets fell regularly thereafter with only Adams (34) and  Andrew Windsor (58) getting in to double figures as Calne collapsed to 165 all out.

Ben Head produced another good bowling performance taking 5 of the Calne wickets for 31 runs off his 10 overs with Frost and Langton picking up a pair each.

Marlborough Captain Arran Dickinson said after the game that he was greatly relieved to get back to winning ways.

“I think we played a lot better today than we have in the last 3 weeks but still below our best.  Hopefully this win will help us move on and finish the rest of the season off strongly.  We batted as a team today in partnerships and the bowlers built pressure as a unit with Ben putting in another top performance.”
