Marlborough Golf Club: Seniors’ Open has record entry

Three early starters: Nick Chapman (Marlborough), Bob Crocker (North Wilts) & Geoff Laney (Marlborough)Three early starters: Nick Chapman (Marlborough), Bob Crocker (North Wilts) & Geoff Laney (Marlborough)The Marlborough Golf Club Seniors’ Open, sponsored by Dick Lovett BMW, had a record entry with 106 players.

Seventy of those competitors were visitors from other golf clubs in the region - and beyond.

The three winners were: Division 1 – Andy Williams (Wells Golf Club), Division 2 – Alan Wignall (Clevedon Golf Club), and Per-Axel Warensjo in the home competition.

Dick Lovett BMW’s sponsorship had helped increase the first prizes to £100 and the firm’s general manager, Steve Faulkner, was very pleased with the event: “We are delighted to be associated with Marlborough Golf Club.  It is such a friendly club.  Everyone was made to feel very welcome and clearly enjoyed the day.”

David Ferris, captain of Marlborough Seniors, was grateful for the sponsorship and delighted with the day: “It was a fantastic day.  The course was in excellent condition.  We look forward to our sponsorship with Dick Lovett BMW for the next two years.”

The very last player out on the course was Mike Johnson who had come all the way from Weymouth. He came with two friends to take part in the Marlborough competition to mark the fortieth anniversary of the restaurant he owns in Weymouth – the Marlborough Restaurant.

He was especially appreciative of the welcome he and his friends received – and of a good day’s golf: “We’ve had a great time. We’ll be back next year.”
