Hockey: Marlborough men survive a 'difficult game' to finish with a 'superb result'
Marlborough 4 Sidmouth & Ottery 3
Next up for Marlborough men was Sidmouth and Ottery, who sat just outside the relegation zone in the Go Crea8 Hockey League - Central One table. However, as it turned out, this was to be one of Marlborough's toughest games.
Marlborough started the game very slowly and were punished very quickly by going two goals down after good counter attacking play from Sidmouth. This woke Marlborough up and they started to dominate possession, creating chances and were rewarded when Keir Aymes-Headley ripped in a drag flick from a short corner.
With their tails up, Marlborough got another goal through team veteran Gareth Playfair, who beat a defender, rounded the keeper and fired the ball home.
With Marlborough on the up, Sidmouth scored on the stroke of half time with a well worked goal. Marlborough down 2-3 at the interval.
The second half was much the same, with Sidmouth looking dangerous on the counter attack, but Marlborough showing a lot of composure. They moved the ball well and looked solid at the back with Matt Way and Keir Aymes-Headley.
The home side drew level through Gareth Playfair after good work from Will Radnedge to leave the game nicely poised with 20 minutes to go.
With the score level, the game started to get a little heated with tackles flying in, but Marlborough stood firm and scored what turned out to be the winner.
Keir Aymes-Headley scored a ripper of a drag flick as he slotted home, right into the corner of the goal.... it was an unstoppable flick!
Sidmouth had nothing to lose and had a go in the last few minutes. They had a goal ruled out - rightly so in the opinion of Marlborough's captain - in the dying seconds to leave the final score 4-3.
It was a fantastic game and as someone put it after the final whistle: "All credit to Sidmouth for the way they played."
The Marlborough News Online men of the match were Keir Aymes-Headley and Will Radnedge.
