Marlborough bounce back in style with convincing win over Chippenham 2nds

Marlborough 48 - 7 Chippenham 2nds

Marlborough got back to winning ways on Saturday with a much improved performance against a young, eager Chippenham side.

The home team was able to put out an exciting back line and a powerful looking pack.   Although at stages of the game the timing was off the team showed great signs for the rest of the season.

The first score of the game after debutant Liam MacDonald made a good break down his wing.   He fed inside to prop Tim Aldridge who took the ball on and setup a maul, number 8 Alex Roper came in and ran in down the blind side for a good opening try.

The next try came 10 minutes later when Rhys Butler carved through the middle of the Chippenham defence, past a number of tackles, to score under the posts.   Nathan Morgan kicked the conversion for a 12-0 lead.

The next 20 minutes of the half was keenly contested without any scoring activity.   As the half drew to an end the home forwards won some good clean ball and a good passing move including prop Matt Davies set up wing Laurence Baker to score in the corner.   Half time 17-0

Soon into the second half battling, scrum half Will Grant sustained a shoulder injury and moved to the wing with MacDonald moving to his preferred position at 9.  The reversed roles soon saw a pass from MacDonald out to Grant who stepped and ran in from just inside the opposition half.   Morgan added the extras.

To the credit of the away team they had the better of the play for the next 20 minutes and scored a converted try of their own to narrow the lead to 22-7.

As the visitors looked to score the next points, it was the home backs who got some good moves going.  The ball was moved swiftly along the line for Grant to score his 2nd try, again converted by Morgan.

The home sides power started to tell and a quick penalty taken by Butler saw him beat the first line of defence and able to run half the pitch to score a second impressive try of the game.   Again Morgan converted.

The following kick off was caught by replacement Patch Campbell.   The ball was moved out and a typical powerful run by Joe Mitchell set up another phase of play.

Campbell appeared in the right place to run in and score.  Moon converted.  The final try of the game came with more good passing and outside half Russ Westcott went in in the corner.
