Marlborough Rugby: Marlborough win an exciting game against Trowbridge to put themselves top of the league after 4 games
Marlborough 45 - 17 Trowbridge
The side from the common were keen for a league win after suffering a cup defeat at Trowbridge two weeks earlier.
The game started with the visitors playing down the slope and putting some early pressure on. They kicked a penalty and continued to look well organised and certainly started the better side. Marlborough did manage to force their way up field and a good break by Ratu Vuira resulted in the ball reaching scrum half James Farrell who stepped the defender to go in and score. Full back James Clancy kicking the conversion. Trowbridge responded by once again putting pressure on and scoring a converted try of their own.
A controversial moment saw centre Russ Westcott, who annoying at himself for offside at a kick, swore to himself and was sent off for bad language. Although down to 14 men the home team were starting to get a good foot hold in the game. Farrell was supplying some great ball for outside half Amori Nailago who was making some excellent breaks. The home team were now going forward and as the half went into injury time they kicked a penalty to make it 10 all.
The second half saw the Marlborough backs really open up and with some great ball being won they had a lot of attacking ball. Waisale Navunidakua scored with a great running line to burst through the defence. Avenai Cakaunitavuki scored wide out on the left wing again after some excellent midfield passing. Props Lotu Ngungutau and Darius Hamilton also got in on the scoring with Navunidakua scoring a second. Clancy kicked 5 second half conversions. Trowbridge did get an interception try.
This was a superb all around display and some very exciting rugby. The performances of Farrell and Nailago to keep the team going forward with great pace was outstanding and also the work of Sam Gouldbourn both in the line out and around the field.
Next week the team have a week off and so will train on Saturday.
